When Things Get Real: Mma Outside The Octagon

Martial arts are developed and taught mainly for self-defense. Some arts are more efficient than others. Others, however, are already combinations of different disciplines. In sporting competitions, martial arts are somewhat restrained. On the streets, it’s a different matter altogether.
Below are some of the best combinations of martial arts for street self-defense.

Krav Maga

The fighting system of choice of the Israeli Defense Force, Krav Maga is a mixed martial art that was developed by Imi Lichtenfeld. He taught it to Jews and other nationalities who were opposed by the Germans and their allies in WWII. Krav Maga is extremely brutal, and a practitioner can end a fight in the blink of an eye with a groin kick or throat strike.

FMA

Filipino Martial Arts or FMA originated in the jungles of the Philippines and primarily uses everyday objects such as sticks and knives. It is also combined with a number of hand-to-hand methods. FMA is popular in militaries worldwide due to its efficiency in handling attackers with weapons. No other mixed martial arts in the world is as effective as FMA in defending against knife attacks.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

A mix of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the premier grappling art of the world. With nine out of 10 fights ending up on the ground, a BJJ practitioner can out-maneuver and neutralize any attacker even with his back to the ground.

Mma: Why Learning It Is The Way To Go

It was the legendary Bruce Lee who is credited for being the father of modern mixed martial arts or MMA. While this is a debatable point, those who are familiar with Lee’s Jeet Kune Do philosophy knows that it’s as close to MMA as a philosophy can get. In a nutshell, Lee took a number of techniques he found efficient and useful in other martial arts and combined them with Wing Chun to create a unique blend of self-defense techniques.

Over the decades, before and after Bruce Lee’s death, there have been self-defense techniques that combine martial arts and can technically be categorized as MMA. From Krav Maga to Marine Corps Martial Arts, people have developed lethal ways of defending themselves with various concepts from many fight forms.

However, the most popular of all is MMA itself, which became a multi-billion-dollar industry with promotions such as UFC, Invicta, and Bellator gaining solid fan bases.

Learning MMA means to take on different forms of martial arts, from wrestling to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Muay Thai to boxing. For the fitness enthusiast, it means more cardio and more chances to push one’s self to the limit. For fighters, it means a huge advantage against those who’ve only mastered a single martial art. Whether the fight stays standing or goes to the ground, MMA fighters will always have a huge advantage.

First is Chandler Rogers from Oklahoma State, whose point-scoring style and impressive foot-sweeps are causing a buzz in the circuit. Expect Rogers to gain more following and more smart wins in coming NCAA competitions.

Missouri’s Jayden Eierman is an explosive fighter on the mat, and many fans would remember his huge performance in Mizzou’s home dual versus Virginia Tech. Eierman is a dangerous opponent who doesn’t shy away from the limelight.

Taylor Lujan from UNI may not have been able to win against second-ranked Zach Epperly, but, boy, did he show some solid moves. That he made the match very competitive with his scrambling ability and solid defense is enough to make us expect more in upcoming competitions.

Bo Nickal of Penn State has shown great throws recently, turning more and more spectators and enthusiasts into fans. He is dangerous on his feet and can easily ride and turn opponents. He should go higher up the rankings soon.

Finally, there’s Nickal’s fellow Penn State standout Jason Nolf, whose unorthodox style and flair have turned many wrestling fan’s heads. His moves are not necessarily recommended for the beginner but are incredibly explosive nonetheless.
